so, a couple of weeks ago i got a message saying my lomohome had been "successfully migrated" to the new site. i toddle along and see my photos on a pretty plain page. i don't really like the look/feel of it now, but then i haven't been active on there much for a while now. i dug around and found my old lomohome, by poking around on http://old.lomography.com and finding links to old-style homes and finding the pattern in the name. i was going to post something about it, but it was late and i didn't. just took me ages to find it again...
so - moved home - it's new and bland, people say it looks like Facebook but i wouldn't know really, and all my old photos are on there, but they don't display as well, and it's all on flash or whatever it is that sometimes breaks down and sits there twirling and blank.

it looks like they won't be moving my old blog or guestbook and walls have been phased out... i don't know when they'll pull the plug on the old site but they're almost done moving everyone's photos over so it won't be long.

for posterity, some of my favorite views:

i think i'm going to go with uk2.net. for the main reason that the hobby package includes a mySQL database, whereas 1&1 doesn't. i don't know what it is but i think i might need one.
main thing i need to find now is a good name.
i'm also going to join a darkroom, and attempt to do some colour printing. i've done plenty of black and white but never colour - is it much of a difference?
Photofusion looks good, and they're open evenings too. in terms of paper - is it always a good idea to print fuji negs on fuji paper etc? or should i just try some of each...

oh hey. can anyone out there recommend a platform/host for a group forum discussion thing?
what it is is the course thing i went to - it would be nice if all we strangers could keep up with each others projects and things, share useful bits and pieces, maybe have a little chat now and then. it might all fade away pretty quick, but it would be nice anyway.
i'd rather it wasn't something people have to join to be accessible (so no facebook or similar). any ideas? i had thought maybe flickr or youtube, since a lot of people have those things anyway, and it is a film/photo thing, but still i think you have to join to comment, so it would be annoying if you weren't already on it. other options - a blogger or wordpress blog that has lots of contributors. i haven't any experience with how these things work though.

i like this guy's website layout http://mattb.tv/. i've been waiting for Indexhibit to start hosting, they keep saying soon, soon, (but how soon??). i figured they would have better support etc. but i'm tired of waiting. i want.

i've been ill again. i'm tired of being ill. i haven't been getting much sleep, i cough all night and my lungs are full of cobwebs. i might need a new job, i'm tired of this one too. bah.

i seem to have spent most of the day reading the internet. it is very big. and of variable quality.
i'm not sure it's a good idea really. i'm going to hang up a picture and read some book.

so i feel ready to get myself a website.

what i want to know is - how do i pick a hosting thing? are there good ones and bad ones? does anyone recommend one or are there any to avoid?

- i want a domain name which probably won't change.
- i want a fair amount of storage space cos the content will be almost entirely graphics.
- traffic allowance needs to be reasonable (for graphics) but i can't see (at least at first) a lot of people coming by.
- i intend to use either wordpress (i'm now familiar with it but it's not really designed for what i want to do) or indexhibit and want to be able to change it if i want.

actually Indexhibit are going to start hosting 'soon' for 45euros p.a. that's a normal kind of price isn't it? i might wait for that, try and get something together offline.

just caught on some sleep - have been getting a bit carried away with reading new things in the evenings resulting in a very tired day in the office yesterday.
the current problem is browser discrepancies - i got it looking ok on Windows IE7, and it resizes well, with the images, text and general area all shrinking proportionally.
on Firefox the header is too big and wraps onto 2 lines. shrinking the view text size makes the text smaller but it still wraps, and the image stays the same size, so the sidebar jumps down to the bottom.
on Safari the heading is wrapped but if you shrink the text size it goes back to 1 line. pictures again stay the same size.
and the spacing of the sidebar stuff is a bit funny on different browsers. it's all so complicated...

i just discovered i have imovie on my computer though, and adobe GoLive, which is all rather exciting. going to have a play and see what i can do...

night eye
as you may know by now i am trying to learn myself the internet...
ok i have this WordPress thing, and i want to know if i can imbed some flash stuff easily, and whether i can write some flash stuff or where i can get it from etc.
basically i like things like this website Building it's so beautiful and simple and it has little videos in. i could imbed videos but that's quite heavy and what would be just as good, maybe better, would be to be able to imbed a slideshow type thing that did dissolve transitions between a few images. the flickr one is also flash i think, something like that but with slower dissolve.
is flash hard? what can you write it in?
and has anyone used this mac programme Coda? is it a good idea?
maybe they are all like this but i find WordPress a bit hard. the interface is hard to use.
have downloaded a few themes to see if i can understand how they work and going to try hacking one together...
